Networks usually choose a comedian to host the Emmy Awards, but in 2026, NBC went in a different direction. This year, producers chose Mariska Hargitay – a bit of a pivot, since Hargitay is best known for playing a more dramatic character for over 20 years on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” the longest-running primetime drama in history. Hargitay was also the first woman to host the series in 15 years.
Hargitay told Variety that the offer came as a complete surprise, adding that some friends even warned her to turn down the role. At best, awards hosts are criticised for being unfunny, but these events can also become minefields for them, where one poor joke can ruin a night. But Pearlena Igbokwe, the NBCUniversal TV chair, told Variety that Hargitay was chosen for three reasons.
“My team was trying to figure out who embodies television, engenders goodwill, and everyone will want to come watch them. And when we got to Mariska, we all looked at each other: Yeah, absolutely,” Igbokwe said. “She is funny. She’s got a wicked sense of humor. And, by the way, we’re in the Mariska renaissance. It’s been the year of Mariska!” The “Mariska renaissance” refers to Hargitay’s other public appearances outside of her usual “Law & Order” episodes, including directing a two-time Emmy-winning documentary about her mother, making her Broadway debut in “Every Brilliant Thing,” and making her name as one of the biggest supporters of the New York Knicks.

Unfortunately, Mariska Hargitay’s stint as host didn’t revive the Emmys broadcast. TVLine reported in September that the Emmys ratings went down by nearly 10% compared to last year’s show. Reviews of the 2026 Emmys weren’t too positive, either. Publications like Forbes and Deadline praised Hargitay for her effort, but most critics agreed her pretaped skits were too long and not really funny, and they didn’t like the musical performances either.
Hargitay led a cameo-filled Emmys night with her opening performance and monologue, featuring appearances from Nicole Kidman, Jalen Brunson, and Jennifer Coolidge. The biggest surprise was Taylor Swift’s appearance in the “Law & Order” skit, where the series’ cast put together random clues to determine whether the pop star will show up at the Emmys. During the appearance, the “Life of A Showgirl” singer appeared to tease her upcoming music when she turned directly to camera in the middle of the skit to say, “Saccharide. Aries. From the vineyard. North or South.” Fans are still trying to figure out what the code means.
Swift and Hargitay have been friends since 2014, after Swift revealed she was a fan of “Law & Order” by naming her cat after Hargitay’s character, Olivia Benson. In 2023, Hargitay returned the favour by naming her cat Karma, referring to Swift’s song from her 10th album, “Midnights.” Hargitay has also appeared in a music video for Swift’s hit single “Bad Blood,” which featured all of Swift’s friends at the time.
