Greek-American actress, writer, and stand-up comedian Despina Mirou has spent years building a career that spans continents and mediums, and she is making no secret of where she would like it to lead: a shot at Saturday Night Live.
Mirou’s résumé already reads like the kind of range that comedy showcases are built on. She appeared in Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald’s “Life in a Day,” playing a version of Elton John while also serving as co-director on the project, her first credit behind the camera. Her film work has also placed her opposite major directors, including a role in David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future,” as well as credits on Netflix’s “On My Block” and HBO’s “Show Me a Hero.”
It’s on stage, though, where Mirou has quietly logged the hours that matter most for a comedian with SNL in her sights. She has become a regular at some of the country’s best-known clubs, working sets at The Comedy Store, The Laugh Factory, The Improv circuit, The Flappers, Stand Up NY, and Greenwich Village rooms in both Los Angeles and New York. Her sharp ear for character and impersonation, honed across those stages, has become something of a signature.
Mirou has spoken openly about Saturday Night Live as the goal she has been working toward for years, calling it the show that shaped generations of comedians she admires, from John Belushi and Gilda Radner to Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrell, and Tina Fey. For a performer with her mix of stand-up chops, character work, and film credits, the dream no longer looks like a long shot so much as a natural next step.
Whether or not the SNL call comes this season, Despina Mirou’s trajectory, from child performer to festival honoree to a fixture of the New York and LA comedy circuits, suggests she has already done the work the show tends to reward.
