Warner Bros. reportedly wants John Mulaney to lead a new Get Smart movie. The Emmy-winning comedian is in early talks to play Maxwell Smart, the clumsy secret agent who always saves the day despite himself. The studio has tapped Seth Grahame-Smith to write the script.
Producers Chuck Roven and Andrew Lazar, who made the 2008 film version, have returned for this reboot. Development remains early, but attaching Mulaney gives the project immediate comedic weight.
John Mulaney’s Get Smart reboot casting is a wild comedy match
Mulaney is deemed to bring a different energy than Steve Carell, who played Smart in the 2008 hit. Carell leaned into physical awkwardness and wide-eyed sincerity.
Mulaney operates with sharper verbal timing and a drier, more self-aware delivery. That style fits the original character created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. Don Adams originated the role in the 1965-70 series, playing Smart as a confident fool who bumbled through every mission while agents around him cleaned up the mess.
The show followed Control, a secret U.S. counterintelligence agency locked in endless conflict with the evil organization Kaos. Smart, Agent 86, partnered with Agent 99, played by Barbara Feldon. Edward Platt rounded out the core cast as the Chief. The series ran 138 episodes across NBC and CBS, won seven Emmys, and earned two Outstanding Comedy Series trophies.
The franchise has seen several revivals. A 1980 film, The Nude Bomb, dropped Brooks and Henry from the credits and failed to capture the original magic. A 1989 TV movie, Get Smart, Again!, reunited Adams and Feldon. Fox attempted a brief 1995 series revival that lasted seven episodes. The 2008 Warner Bros. film, however, became a genuine summer hit. It opened to $38.6 million domestically, finished with $130.3 million domestic, and grossed $230.6 million worldwide.
Mulaney next appears in Madden, the David O. Russell feature starring Nicolas Cage as the legendary football coach and broadcaster. But the Get Smart role would put him front and center in a major studio comedy.
