The first promo for Y: Marshals is here, and it’s a dusty little mood board of everything Kayce Dutton has survived, escaped, or flat-out outrun — only to find himself stepping right back into the kind of trouble he swore he’d leave behind.
Luke Grimes slips right back into Kayce’s quiet, wounded intensity, narrating as if confessing to old sins he’s finally ready to bury.
He lays out the whole emotional résumé in a few clipped lines: he’s lost teammates, parents, and even brothers.
He’s spent years trying to claw his way out from under the weight of the Yellowstone, and deep down, he knows good men sometimes have to do bad things.
It lands like the thesis of the show — a man desperate for a new beginning while fully expecting the universe to snatch it away.
But then the Marshals show up, and any illusion of a peaceful reset evaporates.
Logan Marshall-Green’s Pete Calvin introduces Kayce to his new team, and the vibe is instantly the same “buckle up” energy that every Dutton-adjacent storyline eventually devolves into.
Arielle Kebbel’s Belle Skinner chirps “This will be fun” with the false optimism of someone who has not met a Dutton, and Ash Santos’ Andrea Cruz follows it with the even funnier (and probably more accurate) “Try not to slow us down, cowboy.”
At that point, you can almost see Kayce’s inner monologue sighing, because if anyone has earned the right to slow other people down, it’s him.
As the promo barrels forward, the tone shifts from banter to warning.
These marshals do not sugarcoat what he’s walking into. Gangs, cartels, race warriors — the kind of enemies that make Yellowstone’s seasonal bloodbaths look like county fair disputes.
Logan Marshall-Green gets the grittiest line of the teaser when he tells Kayce that Montana might look like God’s country, but “the devil’s running free out there.”
And that’s the moment it becomes clear: Kayce didn’t escape anything. He just changed the dress code (which, honestly, isn’t all that different, either).
What grounds all of this, though, is Thomas Rainwater stepping back into Kayce’s orbit with a line that feels like it could define the entire series.
“Duttons are all born with a killer instinct. But you’re not a killer, Kayce. You’re a protector.”
Rainwater has always understood him in a way that cuts past the noise, and that dynamic rolling into this new chapter — along with Mo, Tate, and all the lingering ties to Broken Rock — gives Y: Marshals something Yellowstone often danced around but rarely leaned into.
Kayce’s identity as a man who keeps trying to do the right thing in systems designed to break him.
And honestly, that’s what makes this spinoff make sense. Kayce has never been built for the ranch, for politics, or for the endless family warfare that comes with being a Dutton.
He’s always been the one searching for something quieter, cleaner, more human. Becoming a U.S. Marshal feels like his attempt to align that instinct with purpose.
The problem — and the promo knows this — is that the real world isn’t any gentler than the one he left behind. Violence doesn’t disappear just because the badge says “U.S.” instead of “Livestock.”
If anything, the promo hints that Kayce’s about to learn the hard way that doing good comes with just as many ghosts as doing damage.
Still, the energy is fun. The banter is crisp. Logan Marshall-Green is an inspired bit of casting.
And despite Arielle Kebbel’s unfortunate track record of starring in the first season of shows that never see a second, her presence here at least adds the right kind of crackle — the kind that says this crew has personality, even if half of them won’t live to tell the tale.
The whole thing feels like a Dutton season finale stretched into a full series, but with jurisdiction, purpose, and a sense of Kayce stepping into a version of himself he hasn’t been allowed to be.
Y: Marshals premieres March 1 on CBS, and if the promo is any indication, Kayce Dutton may finally be on a path that makes sense… even if it’s still paved with chaos, gunpowder, and every kind of trouble Montana can cough up.
