MARCUS LADDEN JR. | There’s a smooth, endearing quality to Ladden Jr., both in his vocals and in the overall vibe he brings to the stage, so we loved watching him swag out to Lou Rawls’ “You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine.” The runs, the range, andthe moves? He’s the total package. And we weren’t expecting that falsetto moment at the end of the “whoa” run. That was our exact reaction, frankly. (TVLine’s grade: A-)
BROOKLYN MARIE | Something about hearing a 14-year-old singing Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” adds a sweetness and an authenticity to it, and that’s certainly what Marie brought this week. We were hypnotized by that breathy, ethereal chorus, then suddenly wowed by her belting.(TVLine’s grade: A)
BRIANNA CAMERON | We don’t mean to harp on Cameron’s age, but how is this girl 13?! The youngest singer in the competition, Cameron has one of the most mature-sounding voices, complete with a booming belt that came in handy for her performance of Natalie Cole’s “Inseparable.” Kelly Clarkson had tears in her eyes during that explosive finish, and we don’t blame her. (TVLine’s grade: A)
NINA HOWLAND | The power in Howland’s voice is undeniable, and she’s been one of our favorites from Day 1, so our expectations were high for her performance of Renée Rapp’s “In the Kitchen.” We’re happy to report that she actually exceeded our hopes, giving us all the rasp and held-out belts we’ve come to expect from this diva. (TVLine’s grade: A+)
KYLE DAVIS | Davis could use a little more stage presence, but there’s no two ways about it, that voice is magic. It’s so comfortable and secure, helping to make Davis feel like a real storyteller. With a more exciting song, he probably would have been the obvious frontrunner, but Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” was still a serviceable vehicle for Davis’ signature sound.(TVLine’s grade: A-)
Clarkson did not want to make this decision — and we certainly don’t envy the position she’s in — but she ripped off the Band-Aid, revealing that Cameron was staying on her team. Ultimately, Clarkson said it came down to Cameron’s age, explaining that she had to reward someone for being that talented at just 13 years old.
