“The Diplomat” showrunner Debora Cahn knew that Season 4 needed to mix things up for Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), leading her to kill off one of the show’s most important characters. As the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom since Season 1, Kate has forged relationships with numerous British government officials beyond the prime minister, including Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi).
Season 4, Episode 3 unexpectedly reveals that Kate’s close ally and brief romantic fling died in a helicopter crash in India. Dennison’s off-screen demise came out of nowhere for Kate, Hal (Rufus Sewell), and then-Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear), though Cahn revealed that writing the character out of “The Diplomat” had a greater purpose than shock value.
Speaking with TV Insider, the show’s creator explained that she felt Dennison’s death was necessary to demonstrate the constant turnover of government roles, requiring Kate to interact with new people over the course of the story. “The fundamental nature of what it means to be in that kind of job, you get a new post every three years, you’re in a different country, and you’re starting from scratch, or you’re there for 10 minutes, and the government changes, and there’s a whole new cast of characters, and you have no idea what you’re dealing with, and you have no relationships and no way to interpret what the subtext is in any conversation,” Cahn said. “It just felt like we had to put her through that.”
How Keri Russell reacted to Dennison’s death in The Diplomat Season 4
Kate and Dennison frequently discussed foreign affairs in the first three seasons of “The Diplomat,” but their tender friendship had a strong impact on both characters. Although Kate acts completely stunned and proceeds to furiously distract herself upon hearing the news of his death, it was clearly a crushing loss for the ambassador.
Keri Russell shared her insight into Kate’s mental state regarding Dennison in a recent interview with Deadline. “When you’re in service, but traveling, everything is really heightened,” she said. “So the bonds you make when you’re away from home, away from the distractions of everyday life, the people that you meet, it’s extraordinarily deep and passionate, and I think that character for Kate is really pivotal. So to lose him is monumental, but I also think realistic to these worlds.”
“The Diplomat” Season 4 features plenty of other surprises, among them is Prime Minister Trowbridge’s resignation in the aftermath of Dennison’s passing. With Kate and Hal slated for new roles after quitting President Grace Penn’s (Allison Janney) administration in the Season 4 finale, the potential for more drama and political shakeups is seemingly endless if Netflix moves ahead with “The Diplomat” Season 5.
