VisionQuest just introduced a Marvel deep cut that most fans won’t recognize. Here’s everything to know about Paladin, the honor-bound bounty hunter causing trouble for Vision.
VisionQuest explains who Marvel’s Paladin is
Disney Plus’s VisionQuest introduces Paladin (Todd Stashwick) as a bounty hunter bound by a strict moral code. The character debuts in the pilot after a failed ambush on Vision results in the death of Vision’s friend Fiona. Paladin immediately executes the sniper responsible, enforcing his firm “no civilians” rule.
A mysterious Client hires Paladin to hunt and capture Paul Bettany’s synthezoid. His handler (Dianne Morgan) provides support, while Ultron secretly communicates with the bounty hunter behind the scenes. Paladin also uncovers a secret that even Vision does not know: his son, Tommy, is alive.
The resourceful hunter reaches Tommy first and holds him hostage at Saint Mabyns, an insane asylum. F.R.I.D.A.Y.’s investigation reveals that Paladin is the “last in a centuries-long line of hunters.” He works for the highest bidder without discrimination and is “trained in every art and every weapon.”
Paladin considers himself righteous and operates under an unbreakable contract. At Saint Mabyns, he critically wounds Vision with adamantium shotgun rounds before his weapon jams. Vision then gathers enough strength to send the hunter flying, but Paladin will likely return.
In Marvel comics, Paladin first appeared in a 1978 issue of Daredevil under the name Paul Denning. The mercenary frequently clashes with street-level heroes like Spider-Man and has joined teams including Heroes for Hire and the Thunderbolts. The comics version possesses superhuman strength and speed while favoring a stun gun.
His show costume features biker leathers, but the goggles and helmet nod to his traditional comic book look. Paladin famously turned on a corrupt government agency to support the rebels he was hired to neutralize. VisionQuest marks the character’s first live-action appearance after a cameo in the 2017 animated Spider-Man series.
