‘Spider-Man’ Tops Box Office For Fourth Straight Weekend

It’s not a brand new day at the box office — it’s been the same story for a month now.

For the fourth straight weekend, Spider-Man ruled the weekend in theaters. The film took in another $39 million in domestic multiplexes. Its current U.S. gross stands at $854.9 million. That’s the third best in the history of movies — and second best is Avengers: Endgame, which has earned $858.3 million. In other words, in a matter of days Brand New Day will be the #2 film of all-time in the United States.

(The highest-grossing film ever in the United States is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which earned $936.6 million domestic in 2015 and 2016. That number may be out of reach for Spidey, but we’ll see.)

Worldwide is a slightly different story. There, Brand New Day and its $2.21 billion is currently the sixth-biggest film ever — and, in fact, Spider-Man has already passed The Force Awakens on that list. But it’s still behind Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, Ne Zha 2, and Titanic. To climb into the top five all-time, it will need to edge past Titanic’s $2.26 billion gross, about $45 million more.

The weekend’s big release, Insidious: Out of the Further, had a solid showing, earning more than $25 million in theaters. That put it in second place behind Brand New Day.

8. Spa Weekend – $3.0 million ($3.0 million total)
9. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma – $1.9 million ($3.6 million total)
10. The Magic Faraway Tree – $1.3 million ($1.3 million total)

Next weekend’s slate of new releases include Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic action movie The Dog Stars, and the long-delayed cartoon comedy Coyote vs. Acme. Spidey stands an excellent chance to top the box office for at least one more weekend.
