Photos from the set of the live-action Tangled movie have given fans their first look at Mother Gothel. Notably, reports about Kathryn Hahn’s casting in the role first surfaced in early January 2026. Hahn herself confirmed the casting in March.
The upcoming movie will continue the current trend of live-action remakes of Disney animated classics. Live-action adaptations like The Jungle Book and Aladdin have proven to be big box office hits. However, others, such as the recent live-action Snow White movie, have underperformed.
The original Tangled made $592 million at the global box office against a $260 million budget (via Box Office Mojo) and currently has an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, setting expectations quite high for this new adaptation.
Conversations about the live-action Tangled movie have been around since at least 2020. Disney officially began developing the project in late 2024, but production paused in April 2025 amid Snow White’s disappointing box office performance. However, it was unclear whether these two developments were connected.
Ultimately, the project resumed production in October that year. Michael Gracey, who previously helmed The Greatest Showman, is directing Tangled from a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor, who based it on Dan Fogelman’s screenplay for the original film.
Hahn is known for playing Agatha Harkness in the MCU series WandaVision and its follow-up Agatha All Along. She has also appeared in movies like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
