I just happen to have a lot of friends who are lucky in love. The upside is that I’ve racked up a considerable number of hours shopping for wedding guest looks.
What I’ve learned is that it comes down to the dress code. Whether black tie, formal, cocktail, or garden, the choice reflects the couple, the venue, and, most importantly, the vibe. Each comes with its own set of dos and don’ts. I’ve also discovered that you don’t have to buy something new to look chic. Instead, if you invest in one timeless, versatile dress for each popular dress code, you’ll look elegant, save money, and avoid the endless cycle of trying to keep up with what’s trending. To streamline the process, I’m stripping down the most popular wedding guest dress codes to their basics and sharing what silhouette makes sense for each. At the average wedding, wearing white would result in disapproving looks and whispered rumors (or, in extreme cases, a “clumsy” waiter and an overpoured glass of cabernet). With any beach wedding, there’s a good chance you’ll end the night barefoot in the sand, so dress accordingly. That means above-the-ankle hemlines only and no stilettos. Wedges will be your friend, and thankfully, they’re back in style. Airy cotton and linen are wise choices, and unless the couple specifies, I’d stick to periwinkle, violet, coral, and blush tones. If luck would have it, you’ll end up matching the sunset.

Florals for a garden party? Groundbreaking. But a sky-blue slip? Trendsetting. This daytime affair comes nowhere close to the dos and don’ts of a black-tie evening. Pastels are welcome, satin is appreciated, and semi-sheer textiles are acceptable as long as they’re tasteful. A dress that combines all three is certain to win favor with the happy couple.
The only one that comes to mind is a Self-Portrait satin maxi dress. It would be a shame to limit this romantic slip, from the semi-sheer bodice to the flattering paneled silhouette, to just one ceremony. It deserves to be seen.
