The Wrong Turn franchise is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, with that original backwoods horror movie in 2003 spawning six follow-up films to date. The first five sequels were direct-to-video installments that became the very definition of “diminishing returns” – beyond Joe Lynch’s standout Wrong Turn 2: Dead End, that is – and the most recent installment was a reboot that came along in 2021. Directed by Mike P. Nelson, Wrong Turn completely freed itself from the past, and as a result was the best film since the original.
So what’s next for the Wrong Turn franchise? Speaking with Entertainment Weekly for a must-read 20th anniversary retrospective piece that just went up this week, Wrong Turn creator Alan B. McElroy reveals that he’d like to make two sequels to the reboot. McElroy wrote the script to the 2021 movie, the first time he was directly involved in any of the follow-ups.
“I had planned two more films, so there would be a trilogy, based around this idea of the Foundation and these characters,” McElroy tells Entertainment Weekly.
He adds, “I’d love to finish it and see it all come out the way I wanted.”
Here’s hoping. Stay tuned for more on all things Wrong Turn as we learn it.
