The 1996 action-adventure blockbuster Twister is getting a sequel from Universal Pictures all these years later, and Deadline provides an update on the project this afternoon.
Deadline reports, “Universal and Amblin Entertainment are meeting with directors hoping for a spring start on Twisters, a big-scale sequel to the 1996 storm-chasing blockbuster.”
Deadline also notes, “Sources said that the hope is to bring Helen Hunt back, with a drama that focuses in the daughter she had with the character played by the late Bill Paxton. She has caught the storm chasing bug her parents had.”
Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) wrote the script, and Deadline notes in their report that several directors are being eyed to potentially come on board. They include…
- Jimmy Chin & Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi (Free Solo)
- Dan Trachtenberg (Prey)
- Travis Knight (Missing Link)
The original film centered on Bill and Jo Harding (Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt), advanced storm chasers on the brink of divorce who must join together to create an advanced weather alert system by putting themselves in the cross-hairs of extremely violent tornadoes.
Frank Marshall will produce the sequel to director Jan de Bont’s 1996 movie, which earned two Academy Awards nominations and made a massive $495 million at the box office.
