Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of Rob Zombie‘s debut feature House of 1000 Corpses, which infamously sat on a shelf for a few years before actually being released in 2003. Originally made for Universal, the film was ultimately released by Lionsgate, and it went through a handful of changes in the years between being made and being unleashed.
Unfortunately, none of the “Director’s Cut” footage that was excised from House of 1000 Corpses to get its “R” rating has ever been located, and as Rob Zombie explained to Bloody Disgusting back in 2019, it’s unlikely to ever be found. Zombie told us, “There’s nothing. I mean, I don’t know where anything is. I gotta be honest. Nothing’s ever been discovered.”
He added during that same conversation with BD, “Because we bounced around so much and stuff. It’s amazing that they lose these things. But they do. So all that stuff’s lost.”
The good news? Zombie has at least managed to dig up a rare still image from House of 1000 Corpses this week that we’ve NEVER seen, teasing the film’s original ending!
Zombie captioned the photo he shared on Instagram last night, “Super rare still of Captain Spaulding’s truck from the original ending of House of 1000 Corpses.”
The image shows final girl Denise Willis (Erin Daniels) inside of Captain Spaulding’s (Sid Haig) “Museum of Monsters & Madmen” truck, which is never seen elsewhere in the movie. In the only ending that we’ve seen, Denise gets picked up by Captain Spaulding after escaping Doctor Satan’s lair – having no idea that her savior is actually another member of the family.
In the film’s slightly modified original ending (detailed by IMDb), “Spaulding was originally driving a large delivery truck which ended when his assistant, Ravelli, appeared again from the back of the truck, grabs Denise, and pulls her back into the truck which is lit with red light.”
It sounds like a very similar ending to the one we got, with Ravelli (Irwin Keyes) attacking Denise rather than Otis (Bill Moseley). We may never see the actual scene itself, but it’s pretty awesome to finally get a glimpse of this original alternate ending all these years later.
