The highly anticipated follow-up to 2019’s “Captain Marvel,” called “The Marvels,” unites Brie Larson with two of the brightest rising stars in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani, in a film that looks set to propel a new generation of female superheroes in the sprawling superhero franchise.
Larson reprises her role as Carol Danvers, the intergalactic warrior known as Captain Marvel. This time, Danvers teams up with WandaVision’s Monica Rambeau (Parris) and Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan (Vellani) in an adventure that spans the cosmos. Judging by the trailer released on Monday, the trio of super-powered women will have to master their new ability to seemingly morph into one another while embarking on a high-stakes quest to save the universe.
Directed by Nia DaCosta, the first Black female director of a Marvel Studios film, and co-written by an all-female team of Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells, “The Marvels” appears poised to usher in a new age of representation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Beyond the on-screen talent, the behind-the-scenes creatives also reflect a commitment to inclusion and diversity.
While plot details remain under wraps, “The Marvels” is billed as an “action-packed sequel” to “Captain Marvel” that will propel Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau on an epic cosmic adventure. The ensemble cast also includes Park Seo-joon (“Parasite”), Saagar Shaikh, Zenoiba Shroff, and Mohan Kapur.
Initially slated for a 2022 release, “The Marvels” will now hit theaters on November 10, 2023, following production delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the enthusiasm surrounding the film’s first trailer indicates that the wait will be well worth it, with Marvel poised to deliver another blockbuster and a fierce new superhero squad ready to take charge of the MCU. The future, it seems, is female.
