“This creature has to remain scary and slightly intangible by the end of the movie or else we’ve kind of ruined the Boogeyman,” Savage explains. “We needed to find a design that was scary and familiar but also had an element about it that was slightly unknowable but spoke to something existentially terrifying.”

The original story was first published in 1973, before finding a home in Stephen King’s Night Shift collection in 1978. This film marks the first time the tale has been adapted as a feature.
