Anchor Bay Entertainment, under the leadership of founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz, has made a significant acquisition by securing the worldwide rights to the award-winning sci-fi comedy “DADDY.” The film, which has garnered attention and accolades at various film festivals, is set to be released later this year.
“DADDY” has made its mark on the festival circuit, being an official selection at prestigious events such as Dances With Films, the Oxford Film Festival, and the Rhode Island Film Festival. The film’s critical acclaim is further highlighted by its Best Film win at the 2023 Ridgefield Independent Film Festival and its status as a Marquee Film at the 2023 Cinequest Film Festival.
Zambeck expressed his enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating, “DADDY had been on our radar since its festival run. It fits in line with our vision for Anchor Bay, and redefines preconceived notions of both science fiction and comedy. We’re thrilled to share this brilliant, poignant film with audiences around the world.”
The film marks the feature debut of co-writers and co-directors Neal Kelley and Jono Sherman. “DADDY” boasts a talented cast, including Yuriy Sardarov (“Chicago Fire,” Argo, The Ides of March), Jacqueline Toboni (“The L Word: Generation Q,” “Easy,” “Grimm”), Pomme Koch (“WeCrashed,” The Band’s Visit), and Britt Baron (“GLOW,” “The Thing About Harry”).
Set in a dystopian society where the state determines who can become a father, “DADDY” follows four men who attend a government-mandated retreat in the remote mountains of California. Upon arrival, they find themselves without a guide or instructions, left to their own devices to prove to themselves and each other that they have what it takes to become fathers.
The film’s thought-provoking premise explores themes of masculinity, fatherhood, and the role of government in personal lives. It promises to deliver a unique blend of science fiction and comedy, challenging preconceived notions and sparking meaningful conversations.
“DADDY” was produced by Sophia Kalin (The Guilty), Albee Zhang (Beneath the Banyan Tree), Neal Kelley, and Jono Sherman under their Twnshp Pictures banner, with Nate Nemon serving as executive producer.
The acquisition deal was negotiated by Zambeck and Katz of Anchor Bay Entertainment and Sean Pope, partner at Ramo Law PC, on behalf of the filmmakers.
Anchor Bay Entertainment, with its mission to uncover, curate, and release unique films that leave an indelible mark on the cultural landscape, sees “DADDY” as a perfect fit for their vision. The film’s release later this year is highly anticipated, and audiences can expect a cinematic experience that pushes boundaries and challenges societal norms.
As “DADDY” prepares for its worldwide release, it is clear that Anchor Bay Entertainment has made a strategic move in acquiring this award-winning sci-fi comedy. With its talented cast, thought-provoking premise, and the backing of a revitalized distribution company, “DADDY” is poised to make a significant impact on the film industry and captivate audiences around the globe.
