The Hollywood Reporter recently shared the news that 20th Century Studios scrapped their original plan to release the film on Hulu due to the success of the test screening and the blessing of Stephen King himself. The film adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Boogeyman” is making the transition from internet video streaming to a full theatrical release.
On June 2nd, 2023, audiences will finally be able to see the much anticipated horror thriller, The Boogeyman.
The short tale appeared in print for the first time in 1973, but it wasn’t until 1978 that it was included in Stephen King’s collection titled Night Shift. The story is going to be retold for the very first time in the form of a feature film after this. It is noteworthy to note that the same story has been popular with audiences for over half a century, and it is a credit to the timelessness of Stephen King’s work that this story is still relevant and engaging nearly half a century after it was originally published.
The story’s popularity has not diminished in the slightest despite the passage of time, so it should come as no surprise that it will be turned into a feature film nearly fifty years after its initial publication.
According to the studio, the film adaptation follows a 16-year-old and her younger sister as they become the targets of a supernatural boogeyman following their psychologist father’s meeting with a desperate patient at their home. Starring David Dastmalchian, Marin Ireland, Madison Hu, and Chris Messina as well as Sophie Thatcher, Vivien Lyra Blair, and Vivien Lyra Blair. The film is a retelling of a traditional horror story with a contemporary twist, with the overarching purpose of demonstrating that the monster under the bed isn’t always something abstract but can instead be a person.
