Really, is there anything Doom can’t do? Specifically, the 3D-accelerated Doom source port, GZDoom. Altered Orbit Studios is putting it to the test with its upcoming title Selaco, a brand new original shooter running on the engine that boasts plenty of things that go boom, along with copious amounts of the purple(?!) stuff.
Much like Trepang2, Selaco draws heavy inspiration from F.E.A.R. for its action set pieces. At the same time, the game combines the classic FPS goodness of Doom and Quake, with a few modern FPS mechanics thrown in.
The story for Selaco takes place during a violent invasion of the eponymous Selaco, which is an underground facility that’s home to the surviving refugees after the fall of Earth. You play as Dawn, an ACE Security Captain who, with her recent promotion and high level security clearances, is digging deep into the truth behind Selaco’s murky history. Before she can finish her investigation, Selaco is besieged by explosions and gun-toting invaders. Dawn’s investigation will have to be put on pause as she cleans house.
Despite the gunplay, Selaco is a story-driven experience, with the focus being on the personal story of Dawn. Don’t worry, as there’s plenty of action for FPS fans. Much like the John Woo-esque destruction you witnessed (and caused) in F.E.A.R., Selaco features some heavy destructive power of its own. Every single bullet will react accordingly with any materials or objects you hit.
And much like F.E.A.R., the enemy AI in Selaco won’t be a pushover. Your foes will be fully aware of each other’s presence, and work together to take you down. They will keep their distance if you apply constant pressure on them, but won’t hesitate to rush you and attempt to flush you out with grenades if you take cover for too long.
Selaco will hit Early Access on Steam on May 31, with the plan for the game to remain in the service as it continues to develop.
