When Outlander: Blood of My Blood premieres, it will pull viewers deeper into the Fraser family legacy with the story of two central couples whose love stories shape generations.
Among them are Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) and Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield), whose romance begins with letters and blossoms into a lasting, profound bond.
It may sound very similar to the original Outlander, but I can assure you that the prequel unfolds in a way that surprises everyone.

I caught up with Hermione and Jeremy to discuss their characters’ connection, the weight of stepping into the Outlander universe, and what they hope fans will take away from Henry and Julia’s story.
Building Henry & Julia’s Relationship on Outlander: Blood of My Blood
Corfield described Henry and Julia’s connection as “a meeting of minds and a meeting of souls.”

“They first communicate through letters,” she explained.
“I almost think when Julia reads that first letter, she sees it as a cry for help. And then she wants to answer that call.”
“From there it becomes romantic when they start getting to know each other — and then of course that’s the physical attraction when they finally meet.”
Irvine couldn’t resist teasing: “How do we build that physical attraction? Well, for me, come on… Henry’s punching above his weight. He’s covered in mud; he looks like shit.”

The real-life friendship between the actors makes that chemistry natural.
“Luckily, me and Hermione have been friends for over 10 years. So we know each other very, very well,” Irvine shared.
“You can fake chemistry, but it’s hard. With Hermione, it’s very easy. We know each other well, we trust each other.”
Corfield agreed.
“When you’re comfortable with your scene partner, you can just try things and not worry about it,” she added of their bond on Outlander: Blood of My Blood.

“And I think that’s fundamental, particularly for playing a married couple or people who are meant to be very close and experiencing life together.”
Feeling the Weight of the Outlander Legacy
Irvine admitted he didn’t realize what he was stepping into at first.
“When I got the job, I wasn’t really that aware of the Outlander world… it was only when I started doing press about three or four weeks ago that I went, ‘oh my word, yeah, there are some people who really love this show,’” he said with a laugh.
“What a privilege. We spend most of our careers doing jobs and just hoping that there will be an audience. To do something like this where there’s an existing group of people who it means a lot to is a privilege.

“But yeah, we’re now filming season two, and now I feel the pressure. I wish I didn’t know.”
Corfield acknowledged the same pressure but kept her focus on the work.
“Whenever you join a universe that’s loved, there’s always a pressure. But I think with any job, you have to just concentrate on the acting. You have to concentrate on doing your job because that’s all you can do.
“Luckily, we’ve had a lovely, very warm reception from the fans so far. So it’s been easy in that respect.”
What They Hope Fans Take Away
Corfield hopes viewers connect to the depth of Henry and Julia’s relationship.

“I would like them to take away the care that’s there, the love, and the deep knowledge of each other. We see them at a point in their love story where they’re married, they’ve known each other for a while, they have children.”
“They know each other’s flaws, and they know each other’s inner souls. It’s not young love anymore — it’s a really deep, deep connection,” she added.
That’s why I admire the love story. It’s the love that happens after the first initial attraction.”
“It’s completely uncynical,” Irvine adds.
“As the Brits, we’re quite cynical people. And this is a world where love at first sight does exist, and this meeting of soulmates does… there’s something quite lovely about that.”

With Outlander: Blood of My Blood already renewed for a second season, both stars are looking forward to fans embracing Henry and Julia’s journey.
If the first six episodes are any indication, their romance will stand as one of the most heartfelt — and perhaps most quietly powerful — in the Outlander universe.
