Paul’s path heading into Shrinking season 4 feels deviated from everyone else’s, and I’m worried.
Harrison Ford has been such a huge part of why Shrinking works from day one. There’s something about the way he plays off Jason Segel’s Jimmy that clicks.
Their scenes have this easy rhythm, where you can laugh one second and feel a punch to the gut the next.

For me, that connection is the heart of the show, so it’s hard to picture things not building toward them sticking together through the end. That’s why this shift stands out.
Early on, Bill Lawrence spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about how Jimmy’s story was built around grief, forgiveness, and learning to keep going, all wrapped up in a three-season plan.
It sounded tight and intentional, as if the show would end at a specific place.
But now, with Apple TV already confirming a fourth season before Shrinking Season 3 even aired, things don’t feel quite as clear-cut.

Don’t get me wrong, more Shrinking is a good thing. I’m not mad about spending more time with these characters.
Still, there’s this subtle sense that the series has already started to ease toward a conclusion, especially with Paul.
And if you’ve been watching closely, you’re probably having similar thoughts.
Paul Is Ready for Change After Shrinking Season 3
Paul sitting there, clearly over it, pretty much sums up where his story is right now.
Earlier on Shrinking season 3, he finally said it out loud that he’s done. After spending most of his life buried in work, Paul decided it was time to step back.

The Parkinson’s diagnosis pushed him to keep going for as long as he could, but getting married to Julie and fixing things with his daughter Meg changed something in him.
His priorities shifted, and it felt earned. The show took its time getting him there, but the result worked.
By Shrinking Season 3 episode 9, he made it official. He’s moving to Connecticut to be closer to Meg.
She’d brought it up before, but this is the first time Paul actually committed to it. That same episode also wraps up his final week at the office.
There’s even a moment where he passes things on to Gaby. Maybe not exactly how he pictured it, but it felt like closure to me.

And that’s where things get a little strange. Because if Paul’s heading across the country, what does that mean for Shrinking season 4?
This show has always thrived on how close everyone is: living near each other, working together, constantly in each other’s space.
And that’s the whole vibe. Take Paul out of that, or push him miles away, and it changes the energy in a big way.
Is the Series Pointless Without Paul?
I keep coming back to the same thought. If Paul isn’t really around anymore, or worse, barely in it, what are we doing here?
Shrinking Season 3 felt like a goodbye to him. And if that’s the case, maybe that would’ve been the right place to leave things.

Paul isn’t the only one whose story seems near the finish line. Almost every character has been moving toward closure.
Jimmy worked through his grief in Shrinking Season 1, forgave Lewis on Shrinking Season 2, and spent Shrinking Season 3 figuring out how to move on. It’s been quite a journey for him.
Alice, Brian, Liz, and Gaby have had arcs that feel similarly complete. By the end of the season, it actually felt like each of their stories could have been neatly tied up.
Alice heading off to Wesleyan in Connecticut at least keeps her close to Paul, but it leaves questions about Jimmy and the rest of the gang.
How do you keep the same energy and chemistry if the cast is scattered? All I can do is trust that Lawrence, Segel, and Goldstein know what they’re doing.

Shrinking is too well-crafted to throw logic out the window.
Regardless, great series have stretched on past their natural endpoint before, sometimes just because the network wants more episodes.
What that means for the story remains to be seen. As long as Ford’s Paul stays front and center, though, there’s reason to believe Shrinking still has some life left.
I’m genuinely nervous about what Shrinking Season 4 will look like if Paul drifts out of the main orbit.

Will we see Paul mostly through video calls, or will Harrison Ford remain fully embedded?
What do you think? Should Shrinking continue if Paul isn’t fully present, or was Season 3 the perfect conclusion?
