Outlander may be in production on its seventh season, but already we have a lot of information on the latest chapter in the epic story chronicling Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) romance.
From episode counts and shooting locations to cast members, and plot, we’re rounding up everything we know about Outlander Season 7 so far, below. And stay tuned as we continue to update you on the incoming season.
How many episodes will Outlander Season 7 have?
Outlander will have a super-sized seventh season with 16 full-length episodes for fans to relish. It’s the first time since the show’s debut that so many episodes have been included in one season. Part of the reasoning for this is that Season 6 was cut short due to Covid delays and star Caitriona Balfe’s pregnancy. Initially, Season 6 was meant to include 12 episodes but shortened its run to just eight installments.
So, if fans look at it from the perspective of 12 being the average number of episodes per season, the additional four being included in Season 7 are essentially missing installments from Season 6. Even still, Season 7 is being shot as a whole, so don’t expect the start of it to feel like the ending of one chapter with a sudden shift to a new story.
Who will appear in Outlander Season 7?
Season 7 has quite a cast lined up for its run. As expected, Balfe, Heughan, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, John Bell, David Berry, Caitlin O’Ryan, and Paul Gorman are all set to return, reprising their roles as Claire, Jamie, Brianna, Roger, Young Ian, Lord John Grey, Lizzie, and twins Josiah and Kezzie respectively.
Meanwhile, it was revealed that Charles Vandervaart is set to take on the role of Jamie’s illegitimate son William Ransom. And Izzy Meikle-Small and Joey Phillips will appear as siblings Rachel and Denzell Hunter. And since production began, it’s been announced that several former stars are set to reprise their roles including Graham McTavish as Dougal MacKenzie, Steven Cree as Ian Murray, Nell Hudson as Laoghaire Fraser, Lotte Verbeek as Geillis Duncan, Layla Burns as Joan MacKimmie, and Andrew Whipp as Jamie’s father Brian Fraser.
Among the newest cast members is Kristin Atherton as Jenny Muray, who is taking on the role of Jamie’s sister in former star Laura Donnelly‘s stead. Gloria Obianyo will play Mercy Woodcock, a free Black woman navigating the hardships of Colonial America. Rod Hallett will portray Benedict Arnold, and Chris Fulton is set to appear as Rob Cameron. And don’t miss Diarmaid Murtagh as Buck MacKenzie, a role that was introduced in Season 5, but originally portrayed by McTavish.
It’s possible that the stars who comprised the Christie family — Alexander Vlahos, Mark Lewis Jones, and Jessica Reynolds — could return as their story was ongoing when Season 6 ended, but it is currently unconfirmed. Also unconfirmed as returning are Lauren Lyle and Cesar Domboy as Marsali and Fergus Fraser.
What is Outlander Season 7 about?
As fans will recall, Season 6 concluded with Claire’s imprisonment after being accused of murdering Malva Christie (Reynolds). Initially taken into custody with Jamie, the pair were separated on the road with the intention of shipping Jamie back to Scotland and Claire being punished for her alleged crimes in Wilmington. Season 7 will likely continue to track the Revolutionary woes of Jamie, Claire, and their whole family as they’re faced with coming war and personal challenges. Only time will tell what plots will be explored onscreen, but should they continue to correlate with author Diana Gabaldon’s books, fans should expect crossover with stories from A Breath of Snow and Ashes along with An Echo in the Bone.
Where is Outlander Season 7 filming?
Production on Outlander‘s seventh season is taking place around Scotland. Exact locations are kept under wraps, but as fans have come to know since Season 4, the country has doubled as colonial North Carolina quite well.
