We haven’t heard much from Ellen DeGeneres since the end of her talk show in 2022. But now, the former host is gearing up for a new comedy special, in which she looks set to discuss the events of the past four years.
Marking “the final comedy special of her historic career,” Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval will premiere globally on Netflix on Sept. 24, numerous outlets reported yesterday.
According to a description of the special from Netflix, Ellen will get “candid about fame, parallel parking and life since getting ‘kicked out of show business.’”
Fast-forward to today, and Ellen’s new Netflix special looks set to feature the comic talking more than ever about the experience. However, some people are finding the whole concept a little contradictory.
On X, many users called out the irony of Ellen talking about “getting kicked out of show business” in a comedy special on the world’s most popular streaming service, for which she presumably received a generous paycheck.
One post on the matter with more than 70,000 likes read: “My favorite part of Cancel Culture is when canceled celebrities get their own streaming specials where they get paid millions to complain about being cancelled and out of work.”
Earlier this year, Ellen’s career was a prominent topic of discussion in her 27-stop standup comedy tour. During a sold-out show in Los Angeles in April, Ellen told the audience she got “kicked out of show business” because “there’s no mean people in show business.”
Later in the tour, Ellen appeared to indicate that she will retire for good after her final special for Netflix premieres later this month. “This is the last time you’re going to see me,” she told an audience member during a Q&A part of the show. “After my Netflix special, I’m done.”
