Dwayne Johnson had some big ideas when he signed on to play Black Adam.
The actor just revealed that his character was originally supposed to appear in Shazam!, but when he got the script, he didn’t feel like it did Black Adam justice.
“When the first draft of the movie came to us, it was a combination of Black Adam and Shazam: two origin stories in one movie,” Dwayne recently told Vanity Fair.
While the joint movie wasn’t a “complete surprise” to Dwayne, he explained that it didn’t feel right.
“When I read that, I just knew in my gut, ‘We can’t make this movie like this. We would be doing Black Adam an incredible disservice,'” Dwayne said.
He continued, “It would’ve been fine for Shazam having two origin stories converge in one movie, but not good for Black Adam.”
When Dwayne shared his thoughts with Warner Bros., they were actually receptive of his ideas — and changed the whole script.
“I made a phone call. I said, ‘I have to share my thoughts here. It’s very unpopular…’ because everybody thought, ‘Hey, this script is great, let’s go make this movie,'” Dwayne said.
He added, “I said, ‘I really think that you should make Shazam!, make that movie on its own in the tone that you want. And I think we should separate this as well.'”
And while Black Adam is alluded to the first Shazam! flick, his origin story was left untouched, and he’ll be getting his own standalone movie this fall.
Black Adam is set to hit theaters on October 21.
