Fredrik Lindgren, the original guitarist for influential Swedish death metal band Unleashed, among other acts including Terra Firma and Harms Way, has died at the age of 53.
Unleashed shared the news of their former guitarist’s passing on Facebook, writing, “Warriors!!! Sadly, the news have reached us that Fredrik Lindgren, lead guitar of Unleashed 1989-1995 has passed away. Fredrik was a huge part of the early history of the band. For this we are eternally grateful. See you in Valhalla brother!”
Singer Lord Chritus (aka Christian Lindersson) of the band Terra Firma also confirmed Lindgren’s death, stating, “In loving memory of Freddie Eugene 1971-2025. Numbed by the news of your passing, Fredrik my old friend. Hard to put emotions into words. Just hope you have found your peace as you deserve no less. You will not only be missed by me but many, I know this much. Thank you for being a part of my life and colored it with your friendship and musicianship both embodied in what was Terra Firma. We had some really great times and that will never change. All my love.”
Lindgren co-founded Unleashed in 1989, and appeared on their first four albums: Where No Life Dwells (1991), Shadows in the Deep (1992), Across the Open Sea (1993), and Victory (1995). Along with the bands Dismember, Entombed, and Grave, Unleashed are considered among the “Big 4” of Swedish death metal.
The guitarist, who also went by the name Freddie Eugene, exited Unleashed in 1995 amid creative differences and turned his focus to his new band Terra Firma, a stoner metal outfit that lasted until 2003.
Lindgren would go on to form the stoner metal band Harms Way (not the American hardcore band Harm’s Way), after which he launched the band Atlantic Tide. Throughout the years, he was also a member of Born of Fire, Celestial Pain, and Loud Pipes.
Our condolences go out to Fredrik Lindgren’s family, friends, and bandmates during this difficult time. Video of Lindgren performing “Before the Creation of Time” as a member of Unleashed in the early ’90s can be seen below.
