CHVRCHES are gearing up to release a deluxe edition of their debut album The Bones of What You Believe to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Ahead of its release October 13th, they’re sharing “Talking In My Sleep,” a never-before-heard outtake from the era.
Instead of CHVRCHES’ usual frontperson Lauren Mayberry, “Talking In My Sleep” notably features lead vocals from band member Martin Doherty, delivering haunting lines like “Be the reason for my fear/ And the reason for my smile.” While the upbeat track boasts a lot of the same slightly glitchy, caffeinated synth-pop qualities that make up The Bones of What You Believe, “Talking In My Sleep” offers some interesting backstory of a band beginning to find their sound.
“Some of the main sources of inspiration for our first album, including ‘Talking In My Sleep’ were artists that we all share a love for, and a lot of stuff from the ’80s,” the band’s Iain Cook says in a press release. “Kate Bush (particularly the Hounds of Love album), Depeche Mode, Prince, Michael Jackson, and also a bunch of the blog-led indie pop music that was around in 2010. Martin particularly was really invested in that stuff and was bringing a lot of fresh sounds and ideas mixed with the classic ’80s pop influences that we all loved.”
