Brittany Howard is gearing up for the release of her new solo album, WHAT NOW. The LP — her first under a new deal with Island Records, and one of Consequence‘s most anticipated albums of the year — arrives on February 9th.
After earning well-deserved accolades as the lead singer and guitarist of the acclaimed band Alabama Shakes and for her first solo album, 2019’s Jaime, Howard continues her musical journey on WHAT NOW. Early singles such as “WHAT NOW,” “Red Flags,” and “Prove It to You” truly show her versatility as an artist.
“I feel like some of the themes [of the new album] are living in a world where so much craziness is happening so fast and you still have to live with yourself and live with your emotions about it and live in your own body,” Howard tells us. “I can’t go out there solving all the world’s problems, even though that’s what you really feel called to do, because you see so much injustice and so much suffering and so much pain. As any kind of empathetic person, it’s overwhelming emotionally.”
She adds, “So, I feel like this album was me navigating my personal life and also being highly aware that the world does kind of feel like it’s on fire sometimes. And that’s kind of the string that stretches across it.”
Brittany Howard kicks off a new run of tour dates with a two-night stand at Chicago’s Thalia Hall on February 6th and 7th. Her North American dates extend into April, including the Coachella festival, with a UK/European run to follow in the summer. Pick up tickets to her upcoming shows here, and pre-order WHAT NOW here.
