If Barbie’s outsized box office haul wasn’t Kenough, Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster movie is now headed to IMAX screens, complete with additional footage, to close out its record-breaking summer.
Beginning September 22nd (as in, the official last day of summer), Barbie will run for a one-week limited engagement across North America and select theaters globally.
Putting a fine point on July’s “Barbenheimer” face-off, the Greta Gerwig-directed film will get its moment on the big-ger screen as Oppenheimer bows out from its extended IMAX run. “So many Barbie fans went on this journey with us, and we can’t thank them enough for supporting the film and sharing their Barbie experience in theaters, across social media and out in the world,” Gerwig shared in a statement. “We made Barbie for the big screen, so it’s a thrill to be able to bring it to IMAX, the biggest screen of all. And as a special thanks to Barbie fans, we’re excited to share a little bit more of our cast and crew’s incredible work by adding special new footage we hope audiences will enjoy.”
Although the unreleased material remains a mystery, we can only hope that it includes the confirmed “fart opera” that was apparently nixed from the film’s final cut. In the meantime, fans can get their fix on the small-screen when Barbie becomes available for digital purchase on September 5th.
As of August 2023, Barbie holds the title of highest-grossing film of 2023 domestically, and has earned over $1.3 billion at the global box office. On its way to becoming the highest-earning film directed by a woman, the movie has also made co-producer and star Margot Robbie a whopping $50 million alone, while co-star Ryan Gosling earned his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100.
