Ariana Grande has called on her fans to stop “sending hateful messages to the people in my life based on your interpretation” of her new album, eternal sunshine.
“i just wanted to say anyone that is sending hateful messages to the people in my life based on your interpretation of this album is not supporting me and is absolutely doing the polar opposite of what i would ever encourage (and is also entirely misinterpreting the intention behind the music)…” Grande wrote in a message posted to Instagram on Saturday.
“i ask that you please do not. it is not how to support me,” she added. “it is the opposite. although this album captures a lot of painful moments, it also is woven together with a through line of deep, sincere love. if you cannot hear that, please listen more closely.”
As with most of her music, the songs featured on eternal sunshine are deeply personal and some fans have interpreted the title track as being about her ex-husband, Dalton Gomez’s alleged infidelity.
Read Mary Siroky’s review of eternal sunshine, which she describes as a sparkling but slightly unfocused album.
To accompany the release of eternal sunshine on Friday, Grande unveiled a video for “we can’t be friends (wait for your love)”, which is heavily inspired by the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotlight Mind and stars actor Evan Peters.
Grande will appear as the musical guest on this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live with host John Brolin. She is also set to present at the 2024 Academy Awards on Sunday night.
