Iconic filmmaker David Lynch died on January 16th at the age of 78. Artists, creatives, and members of the film community at large took to social media to express their gratitude for Lynch’s visionary, distinct work.
Director Ron Howard expressed his thanks for the person he called “a gracious man and fearless artist who followed his heart and soul.” Howard also noted that David Lynch “proved that radical experimentation could yield unforgettable cinema.”
“RIP David Lynch,” Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn shared on Twitter. “You inspired so many of us.”
Jane Schoenbrun, our 2024 Filmmaker of the Year and director of I Saw the TV Glow, expressed their thanks to the director, whose work provided a foundational reference point for the breakout movie. “He was the first to show me another world, a beautiful one of love and danger I sensed but had never seen outside sleep,” they revealed. “Thank you David, your gift will reverberate for the rest of my life.”
Mulholland Drive actress Lee Grant recalled the thrill of working with Lynch after being “fascinated” with Twin Peaks. “When offered the chance to work with him for a day, I jumped at the opportunity to see how a mind like that directed,” she said. “It was a day on Mulholland Drive. He was, in actuality, a one of a kind artist.”
Questlove of The Roots posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram. “Lynch was the first human/creative that stressed the importance of not overworking and taking time out to breathe and meditate and searching for creative avenues not in my comfort zone (he was my guiding creative light for the Somethingtofoodabout book from 2016),” he revealed. “Took a liking to me always inviting me to his events and parties and really stressing the importance of self care. Thank you.”
Actor Patton Oswalt, a noted fan of Lynch’s film Eraserhead, spoke to the filmmaker’s idiosyncratic filmography. “David Lynch, RIP,” he wrote. “At least that’s what the horse wearing a fez just told me* in a dream (*backwards and in Swedish).”
Chris Stein of Blondie posted a photo of Lynch onstage, recalling a 2016 event where the filmmaker delivered a monologue about his love for wood. Music producer Flying Lotus chimed in to identify Lynch as his “hero.” “One of the world’s greatest artists of any era…He knew,” he said on Twitter.
Filmmaker Damien Leone, the creator of the Terrifier franchise, said he was “truly devastated” by the loss and called Lynch “one of the greatest and most fascinating artists/filmmakers/icons” of our time.
Video game writer and director Sam Lake, whose Alan Wake games were heavily inspired by the visual language pioneered by David Lynch, echoed the sentiment. “David Lynch has been a huge inspiration to me and a huge influence on my work,” he wrote on Twitter. “Rest in peace.”
Screenwriter Brian Lynch (no relation) simply wrote, “David Lynch was the greatest.”

Like Kafka, like Bacon, he dedicated his life to opening a portal. He was the first to show me another world, a beautiful one of love and danger I sensed but had never seen outside sleep. Thank you David your gift will reverberate for the rest of my life. https://t.co/pK2GDycV1Y
