The creators of Netflix’s Wednesday are working on a new Addams Family animated movie. The update comes after Season 2 Part 1 of the series premiered on the streaming platform. However, there is a twist to the development of the project. Apart from the film, a spin-off based on Fred Armisen’s character, Uncle Fester from the series, is also in the works at Netflix.
Amazon teams up with Wednesday creators for new Addams Family animated movie
Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the Wednesday series creators, recently sat down on Deadline‘s Crew Call podcast, where they shared that an Addams Family animated movie is in the works, but not with Netflix.
Although Netflix has already greenlit Wednesday Season 3, this animated movie will be a completely different project with Amazon MGM.
Gough shared, “We’re working on it with Amazon MGM and with Kevin Miserocchi, who runs the Addams Foundation, he knew Charles Addams and the keeper of the Addams flame, and with Gail Berman and John Glickman. We’re rebooting the animated film franchise.”
He further shared that the movie will have no connections to the Netflix series or the previous Addams Family movie. Gough conveyed, “It won’t have anything to do with the two films before it, nor is it connected with this show. It will be a brand new Addams feature. There’s not really much we can say about it, because it’s in the very early stages.”
The outlet also revealed that the creator duo is looking to release the project on the big screen, instead of a streaming service. Amazon MGM’s project will serve as the reboot for the two Addams Family animated movies featuring Charlize Theron, Oscar Isaac, and more, which came out in 2019 and 2021.
Director Barry Sonnenfeld previously brought the Addams Family to theaters with his 1991 film, The Addams Family, and then again in 1993 with Addams Family Values.
