Ahead of the MaXXXine theatrical debut later this year, X — the first film in Ti West’s slasher trilogy — will arrive on Netflix next month. The streamer announced that the Mia Goth-led feature will hit the platform on February 1.
Hailing from the popular independent company A24, X originally premiered in March 2022, with its prequel Pearl having debuted in September of the same year.
X chronicles the story of a group of young filmmakers venturing into adult filming in rural Texas under an isolated boarding house owned by an elderly couple. But when their hosts found out about what they were up to, they soon found themselves in the hands of a gruesome, cold-blooded killer.
“In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film in rural Texas, but when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the cast find themselves fighting for their lives,” the logline reads.
X debuted to critical acclaim
X and Pearl further cemented West as one of the most prolific names in the genre, as well as Goth’s reputation as a contemporary scream queen and horror icon. Both features received positive feedback from critics and audiences alike, with early MaXXXine reactions already establishing the X trilogy as a timeless slasher masterpiece for years to come.
The film starred Goth as both Maxine and Pearl, Jenna Ortega as Lorraine, Brittany Snow as Bobby-Lynne, Scott Mescudi as Jackson, Martin Henderson as Wayne, Owen Campbell as RJ, and Stephen Ure as Pearl’s husband Howard.
Furthermore, Pearl explored the title character’s early years and how her shattered dreams of having a glamorous life served as one of the reasons why she ended up becoming a terrible person. It starred David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Alistair Sewell.
MaXXXine will see the return of Goth and is set five years after the horrifying events of X.
