Despite fresh competition from The Expendables 4, The Nun 2 sat upon the box office throne once again this week and passed a significant milestone in the process.
The Nun 2 brought in $8.4 million for its third domestic weekend, just pipping The Expendables 4. It marked a low point for the year at the box office, with no film breaking the $10 million barrier.
Breaking a Box Office Habit
With no big hitters allowed to promote the films due to strike action, this looks like the week it really hurt . Thankfully, it looks like things may get better soon with the news that the WGA has struck a tentative deal with the AMPTP.
But The Nun 2 is otherwise in healthy shape. It’s brought in $70 million domestically and amassed $204 million worldwide. It’s still some way off the $365 million the first film took in 2018, but given the way things have changed since then alongside the strike, it’s a pretty impressive haul already.
It cost Warners and New Line just under $40 million to produce, so it’s been an undoubted success however it does in the next few weeks. A fresh push as we come into October could give it legs.
A Haunting in Venice took third place with $6.3 million in its second weekend of release. So far, the Disney and 20th Century film has grossed $71 million worldwide.
