In a recent interview with The Wrap, Beetlejuice 2 cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos has shared a new detail about Tim Burton’s highly-anticipated sequel to the 1988 dark comedy. He revealed that the theme of Beetlejuice 2 will be all about family, hinting at Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega’s connected storyline.
“At its heart, Beetlejuice [2] is a story about a family,” Zambarloukos said. “And now it’s 30 years later, and what are the intricacies and the human condition in keeping a family together all that time set in the craziest world possible? That’s why I choose projects. That human connection for me is always at the forefront.”
What to Expect in Beetlejuice 2?
Beetlejuice 2 is once again being directed by Tim Burton. This marks Burton’s feature directorial comeback, four years after helming Disney’s live-action Dumbo. After initially working together in Netflix’s Wednesday series, Scream VI star Jenna Ortega reunites with Burton. Joining Ortega are returning stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara. The sequel will also introduce new characters in the form of Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe.
Production on the upcoming sequel is currently suspended due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. It’s unclear if this filming delay would also change the project’s current theatrical release date of September 6, 2024.
Beetlejuice starred Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Jones, Alec Baldwin, and Geena Davis. The film centered around a deceased married couple who called on the services of the obnoxious and mischievous poltergeist from the Netherworld to scare away the new residents of their former home. Since its debut, it earned both critical and commercial success with a box office gross of over $73 million.
