Actress Aubrey Plaza has released a public statement following the death of her husband, writer-director Jeff Baena, who died by suicide on Friday, January 3, at the age of 47.
Plaza, along with the Baena and Stern families, expressed their grief through a brief statement shared with PEOPLE, saying, “This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.”
An assistant discovered Baena’s body in his Los Angeles home, and law enforcement reported his death on Friday. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed he died by suicide. His passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from fans and the film community.
Baena gained recognition for directing and co-writing several films, including Life After Beth (2014), Joshy (2016), The Little Hours (2017), and Spin Me Round (2022). He first rose to prominence by co-writing the 2004 cult classic I Heart Huckabees with filmmaker David O. Russell.
