While I may spend countless hours every day obsessing over all things fashion, my best outfits are often when I’m not overthinking them. The unattainable, effortlessly cool vibe, which we all tirelessly try to curate (myself included), should be precisely that, effortless. So I propose we take a step back and start with the basics. Literally.
I spotted this layering trend on my FYP about a year ago, and since then, I’ve seen it everywhere. It is simple, easy, and effortlessly cool. Doubling up on basics is my favorite layering technique. Loved by fashion people everywhere, I’ve put together a how-to on the best way to layer basics. With style inspiration from stylist Marianne Smyth, Oslo-based fashion person Nnenna Echem, and style enthusiast Amaka Hamelijnck, you can trust you’re in good hands. Keep scrolling for inspo and tips, plus how I’ve styled this life-changing layering technique.
What Makes It So Cool?
Well, taking what I’ve learned from Parisian style, there is a certain je ne sais quoi to layering. Maybe it’s the mystery of wearing two shirts? Or it’s a safeguard in case you spill your morning matcha? Or perhaps, as I believe, it’s in the simplicity. (Or a combination of all three). Styling two basic tops together maximizes your wardrobe’s potential using minimal effort. Not to mention, the nonchalant attitude of effortlessly throwing on two contrasting colors with one peeking through, just gives cool girl.
By limiting the moving parts and sticking to the basics, we are opting for a combination that will always yield a chic look. These basics are best when paired with other uncomplicated pieces like jeans, trousers, capris, or a maxi skirt, allowing for color, shape, and texture to be the center of attention.
The Key To Layering Is Simplicity
Above, Marianne has styled two capped sleeve tees—a heather grey tee on top with a pop of white underneath. Grounding the look with a dark barrel leg jean from Citizens of Humanity, she brightens the ensemble with a cherry red cardigan. Her simplistic styling should be on your radar.
Quality Basics Are Essential
The quality of your basics is equally essential. Consider cottons and linens as breathable options ideal for everyday wear. It is crucial to consider the cut as well. While a crewneck is one of the more popular styles, V-necks are having their moment with the fashion set right now. Not to mention the elegant boat neckline. Through this basics edit, I’ve pulled styles from trusted basics brands such as Uniqlo, Intimissimi, Gap, J.Crew, and more.

Here’s How To Style
Nnenna’s long-sleeve boatneck and black cami pairing is an excellent example of styling two contrasting cuts and colors. The rounded scoop of the tank beautifully complements the sophisticated boat neckline of her sheer long-sleeve. The trousers are uncomplicated, and her addition of silver cuffs and bangles is uber-chic. The metallic look and mixed texture elevate the look.
A Chic Color Palette Is Essential
Working with a limited color palette and prints can broaden the possibilities of this layering technique. Here, the black cami elegantly contrasts with the stark white long-sleeve. While Marianne’s previous look was also rooted in neutral colors, she included a pop of red; both outfits effectively use contrasting hues for an eye-catching look.

Here’s How I Styled It
With two basic camis from the Gap that I picked up walking home from work last week, and a pair of capris from COS, I went for a Parisian-inspired look (because France is a mindset). The breathable, stretchy cotton blend of the tanks is perfect for this NYC heat. In love with the scoop neckline, I think I’ve found my new favorite ‘fit. I’m already planning on styling the black cami with a boat neck top for this weekend.
P.S. I never leave home with my wired earphones. Trust, they are the hottest accessory I own.
Try Adding It To Your Rotation
I recommend giving this basic layering technique a try. For one, it looks great! Two, it’s an easy way to elevate your look. And three, you’ll discover new ways to style pieces you may already have in your closet.
