This just in: H&M’s fall/winter collection hit stores yesterday, and when I say I’m already loading up my cart, I’m not kidding. I spent the morning scrolling through the new drop, which is filled with key seasonal trends like leopard print, funnel necks, and rich burgundy tones. One piece, in particular, though stopped me in my tracks. The Belted Maxi Coat ($150), a floor-length wool-blend style complete with a belted waist and very of-the-moment funnel neckline. With those details, the coat looks like it should be listed on Net-a-Porter for 20 or 30 times its price. I know it’s still early to be thinking about coats, but trust me when I say that this one won’t be staying in stock for very long.
I quickly realized why. It reminded me so much of the coat I spotted Hailey Bieber wearing all fall and winter of last year. Bieber’s was a Saint Laurent piece, though, that rings up for a cool $6490. While Bieber’s was a runway style in black wool, the H&M version is actually a dark army green shade and made from a blend of recycled polyester and wool, though it looks just as chic. Below, see the origins of the coat on the Saint Laurent runway, how Hailey Bieber wore hers on repeat all of last fall and winter, and then compare H&M’s new affordable version for yourself.
On Hailey Bieber
On Hailey Bieber: Saint Laurent Wool Coat ($6490); Loewe Padded Leather Boots ($600) and Nappa Leather Leggings ($1700); Saint Laurent SL 557 Shade Sunglasses ($395), Le 5 À 7 Hobo Bag ($2400)
Bieber wore her Saint Laurent duster coat during a trip to Aspen last December, which she styled with puffer boots and leggings in a very ski-chic way.
The Rhode founder and new mom clearly plays favorites, because she sported the same maxi topper all fall and winter, whether it was dressing it up with a dress and tights or throwing it on casually with jeans and loafers.
On the Saint Laurent S/S ’23 runway
The Saint Laurent spring 2023 runway was an especially memorable one for a number of reasons, but mostly because of all the strong outerwear looks that featured prominently throughout the collection, specifically the maxi coats. They came in a range of leather and wool iterations that featured strong shoulders and long hemlines that just barely grazed the floor, complete with high funnel necks for an ultra-elegant silhouette.
