Wegmans has begun hiring and training to staff its first Long Island supermarket.
Currently under construction, the 95,000-square-foot store at DSW Plaza is at the southeast corner of Middle Country Road and Moriches Road.
Expected to open in early 2025, the Lake Grove Wegmans will employ more than 500 people, according to a company statement.
Wegmans is now accepting online applications for entry level, management and full-time openings across every department, including culinary positions. The store will also host an in-person hiring event for all full-time positions on Thursday, March 21, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lake Grove Hiring Office, at 2780 Middle Country Road, Suite 140 in Lake Grove.
Applicants are encouraged to submit an online application before the event at jobs.wegmans.com. Interviews will also be provided for walk-in applicants on the day of the event.
“We are thrilled to be opening Wegmans in the vibrant and welcoming community of Lake Grove in 2025,” Lake Grove Store Manager Dawn Cooper said in the statement. “We look forward to getting to know the community, supporting local initiatives, and creating a positive impact. We are excited to be bringing around 500 new jobs to the area and are looking to hire energetic people who are passionate about people and food. Prior to the Wegmans Lake Grove opening we will be providing paid training at one of our existing stores.”
Wegmans has been looking to open stores on Long Island for a while. After signing letters of intent and entering into lease negotiations for a few retail spaces in Nassau and Suffolk counties in 2015 and 2016, the family-owned chain pulled out of those deals. The company had been considering sites in Holbrook, Huntington and Yaphank, as well as the former Sears property in Hicksville, according to real estate industry sources.
After opening stores in Brooklyn and Manhattan, Wegmans finally secured a Long Island foothold last year when it closed on its purchase of the 8.5-acre Lake Grove development site. The grocery chain paid Prestige Properties & Development, owner of DSW Plaza, $15.3 million for the property.
Founded in 1916 as the Rochester Fruit & Vegetable Company by brothers John and Walter Wegman, the business has evolved as a regional supermarket chain called Wegmans Food Markets. The chain, which had 2023 revenue of about $12 billion, according to Forbes, now has more than 53,000 employees and 110 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Delaware and North Carolina.
