New York Institute of Technology has joined Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network, or KEEN, a national organization that focuses on developing and promoting innovation “for the good of society,” according to the university.
Partnering intuitions share a vision of providing students with an “entrepreneurial mindset,” along with the technical skills inherent within their degree. This way, graduating students are equipped to prepare “personal, economic, and societal value through a lifetime of meaningful work,” according to New York Tech.
“KEEN developed the entrepreneurial mindset framework to supplement the engineering skills that faculty already teach,” Jane Polizzi, assistant dean of administration and operations for New York Tech’s College of Engineering and Computing Sciences, said in a statement.
“Engineering colleges typically teach design and technical skills. Entrepreneurial mindset includes the elements of opportunity and impact,” Polizzi added. “The broader approach results in our students being open for opportunity on the front end while considering the impact of their designs on the back end. Including this full scope adds value for the employers of our graduates.”
As a member of the network, New York Tech plans to develop programs on its campuses on both Long Island and in New York City that would advance curiosity, connections to integrate information from many sources, and create value to the engineering education community.
New York Tech is the only local member of KEEN. Additional members include Duke University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Lehigh University and other institutions of higher education.
