New York State has awarded a $5 million grant to Port Jefferson-based Maryhaven, a provider of family-like group homes and apartment-style communities where adults with special needs can live independently with support.
Sponsored by the New York State Budget Office, the funding will help pay for renovations and upgrades to Maryhaven’s 26 community day habilitation programs and residential structures. Renovations will include improvements to kitchens and bathrooms, buildouts of workshops and basements, as well as upgrades for heating systems, roofs, and windows.
The renovations and upgrades are to begin this fall, with a spring 2025 completion date.
“Maryhaven recently celebrated our 93 anniversary, and as our organization continues to grow and serve our communities with the comforts of home in a supervised, supportive environment, we are thankful for the support of grants like these to keep our residences up to date, comfortable and safe for the wellbeing of our staff, residents and families,” Charles Vanek, executive director of Maryhaven, said in a statement.
The organization aims to help people so that they can reach their highest potential, and live with dignity, purpose and inclusion. Programs and services include residential and day programs and support services for families. so individuals can acquire, retain, or improve their self-help, socialization, and adaptive skills, including communication, travel, and other areas in adult education.
Maryhaven is part of the Kinexion network, a management service organization that was launched this year. Kinexion’s network comprises seven not-for-profit organizations that support more than 5,000 people with disabilities, providing an infrastructure of finance, information technology, human resources, corporate compliance, purchasing, maintenance and logistics.
