Joe Carpenter, the husband of Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter has died. He was 81.
Those who knew Joe Carpenter say he was soft-spoken and kind. A family man, he was known for his quiet strength and sense of humor.
Carpenter was born Jan. 3, 1943, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to parents George and Erdine.
In his professional life, Carpenter first served as a land surveyor, before working in commercial printing. Later, he and Angie Carpenter cofounded AC Type & Printing, a business that they built together, side by side.
A sports enthusiast who was equally dedicated to his community, Joe Carpenter served for many years as a Little League coach, a youth football coach and a Boy Scout volunteer. On early Sunday mornings, Carpenter was often spotted lining the fields so that the teams could play sports. It was through these kinds of contributions that Carpenter enriched the lives of young athletes, their families and community.
The health challenges that Carpenter faced in his final years of life were met with “remarkable resilience and courage” as well as “strength,” “sheer determination” and “grace,” according to his family. Carpenter died on Nov. 16 at Good Shepherd Hospice in Rockville Centre.
In addition to his wife Angie Carpenter, Joe Carpenter is survived by his children, Richard (Stacey) and Robert (Elisangela); his brother, James (Teri); his sister-in-law, Mary; his grandchildren, Sydney and Joe; and many loving nieces and nephews.
