Long Island is once again featured on a Netflix series. Parts of “Zero Day” were filmed on the Gold Coast and elsewhere in the metropolitan area. The production added $146 million to New York’s economy, supporting 2,073 members of local cast and crew, according to data released Monday by the Motion Picture Association (MPA).
The conspiracy thriller stars Robert DeNiro, Connie Brittan, Angela Basset, Joan Allen and others. On Long Island, filming took place in Oyster Bay Cove, home of the series’ talk-show provocateur played by Dan Stevens. Filming also took place elsewhere in New York.
“Netflix’s Zero Day takes global audiences through twists and turns in pursuit of the truth — but the economic value of its production is undeniable,” Charles Rivkin, chairman and chief executive of MPA, said in a news release about the show’s economic impact in New York.
“This gripping thriller created high-quality jobs for New Yorkers, pumped critical growth into the local economy, and delivered investments to small businesses statewide,” he added.
The production participated in New York State’s Film and TV Tax Credit Program, which Gov. Kathy Hochul has proposed extending and enhancing this year.
The limited series filmed for 103 days in Brooklyn at Steiner Studios, as well as in Manhattan and Queens. It was also filmed in Westchester County, including Briarcliff Manor, Pleasantville, Purchase, Rye Brook and Sleepy Hollow, and in Nyack in Rockland County.
Doug Steiner, chairman of Steiner Studios, said that “the benefits [of the production] reach far beyond our soundstages, from local small businesses to multiple communities around the state.”
For this production, more than $1 million was spent on local catering and food, and another $1 million was spent on local lodging and accommodations, according to MPA’s data. In addition, more than $1 million was spent locally on transportation, including truck and car rentals. More than $450,000 was spent on hardware and lumber. And more than $24 million was spent locally on purchases, rentals and more.
