National discount retailer Burlington Stores will soon open a new store in Oceanside.
The New Jersey-based chain announced it is opening a 37,236-square-foot store in the South Shore Plaza shopping center at 3640 Long Beach Road within the next few weeks. The space was last occupied by a Bed Bath & Beyond store that closed last year.
In the midst of a major expansion, Burlington Stores is doubling its locations across the country while reducing the size of its new stores. The average size of new Burlington stores, which used to be around 45,000 square feet in 2017, shrunk to about 28,000 square feet last year.
Here on Long Island, the off-price chain has opened new locations in Freeport, New Hyde Park, Huntington, West Babylon and Selden in the last 13 months and it’s planning to soon open another in Riverhead.
The company has taken dozens of the big-box spaces left behind by Bed Bath & Beyond in the wake of that chain’s bankruptcy, acquiring more than 60 of its former leases nationwide, including four on Long Island. But here it’s also replaced Modell’s Sporting Goods in Freeport and Marshalls in Huntington, which relocated to another space in Huntington Commons.
Burlington Stores is looking to ride the current wave of discount retail popularity, though the chain will face increasing competition from newcomers to Long Island. As first reported by LIBN last week, Dublin, Calif.-based Ross Stores plans to open four stores next spring at shopping centers in Hempstead, Islandia, Bohemia and Farmingville, according to real estate industry sources. And Harrisburg, Pa.-based Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, another fast-growing chain of discount merchandise, opened its first Long Island location in a 32,000-square-foot space at Selden Plaza in November and the company plans to open a second Long Island store at Riverhead Plaza.
Like most Burlington Stores locations, the new Oceanside store will employ between 65 and 75 people.
Publicly traded Burlington Stores reported fiscal 2023 net sales of $9.7 billion and has more than 1,010 stores in 46 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, according to the company.
