Bideawee has sold 27 acres of its Westhampton property to the Town of Southampton Community Preservation Fund for $1.5 million.
Bideawee, one of the country’s oldest animal welfare and pet adoption organizations, retains 33 acres and continues its Westhampton operations in four buildings totaling about 19,000 square feet at 118 Old Country Road.
Leslie Granger, president and CEO of Bideawee, said the property sold to the Southampton Community Preservation Fund was unused land.
“We want to assure the community and all animal lovers in the vicinity that it will remain business as usual at all our facilities – including our Westhampton site,” Granger said in a written statement. “The land involved in the sale was not in use, so while the Town of Southampton Community Preservation Fund gets to conserve more beautiful eastern Long Island land, Bideawee can use the funds to serve animals in need. It’s a win for the community and a win for the homeless pets in our care.”
Besides its Westhampton facility, Bideawee also has locations in Manhattan and Wantagh.
Founded in 1903, Bideawee is a nonprofit organization that operates adoption centers and provides veterinary services, pet therapy programs and pet memorial parks.
The Town of Southampton Community Preservation Fund, which aims to preserve land in its natural state in perpetuity, has so far preserved more than 4,000 acres of land across Southampton.
