Houston-based Avelo Airlines has added Long Island MacArthur Airport as a new destination, offering flights to North Carolina and Florida. Introductory fares begin at $59.
Avelo is the fifth airline to join the airport. Also flying out of MacArthur are Breeze Airways, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Southwest Airlines.
The airline will offer twice-weekly service on Thursdays and Sundays. On May 22, service will be available from Charlotte’s Concord-Padgett Regional Airport. And on June 12, the airline service will begin from coastal Carolina’s Wilmington International Airport. Also on June 12, the airline will offer services from central Florida’s Lakeland International Airport to MacArthur.
Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said “additional air service is important to Long Island, both for its convenience in terms of easy travel and for the way it fuels economic vitality.”
The airport has “enjoyed a 13 percent increase in total seats year over the previous year,” Carpenter said.
Avelo Airlines spokespeople said that as the airline grows, it continues its focus on affordability, convenience and reliability. The airline first took flight in 2021, and has flown more than 6.3 million passengers on more than 50,000 flights.
“We continue to inspire travel by growing our network at our newest bases,” Andrew Levy, Avelo Airlines founder and CEO said in a news release.
MacArthur’s additional airline follows an announcement in February from Gov. Kathy Hochul, who said New York State will provide $150 million to Suffolk County for the infrastructure to connect the Long Island Rail Road Ronkonkoma station with a proposed north terminal at Long Island MacArthur Airport.
