Long Island Arts Alliance has announced the full program for its Arts Education Summit on Jan. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hofstra University in Hempstead.
Julie Baker, CEO for Californians for the Arts, a statewide organization that focuses on arts advocacy and creative industry coalitions, will deliver the keynote.
Sessions include “Bridging Perspectives: The Role of the Arts in Education and Our Communities.” In this session, a panel will explore the role of the arts and community development, and include collaborative strategies and challenges. Regent Roger Tilles will moderate the panel discussion, which will feature Michael Salzman, interim director of NYSSMA; Peter Klein, president of the Claire Friedlander Foundation; James Lentini, president of Molloy University; and Stephanie Turner, director of Education and Outreach at the Tilles Center.
“Micro Advocacy Communities through PEACE [Partners in Education, Arts, and Community Empowerment]” will feature an interactive workshop focused on leveraging networks for impactful arts advocacy. Strategies will include community building and arts-based practices that support 21st century skills; career, college and civic readiness; and culturally responsive sustaining education. This session will be led by two experts from the PEACE Project, including Christine Baum, the manager of the organization, and April Francis-Taylor, diversity, equity and inclusion specialist.
“Advocacy 101: Empowering Voices for the Arts” will be led by former New York State Assemblywoman Gina Sillitti and Erika Floreska, president of the Long Island Children’s Museum. They will share practical strategies to mobilize networks, engage with policymakers and community leaders, and champion the arts in education.
