Macy’s has announced the closing of 66 stores across the country, including three on Long Island.
The three Long Island stores that will be shuttered are Macy’s Backstage stores in New Hyde Park and Melville and a Macy’s department store at the Sunrise Mall in Massapequa.
Going-out-of-business sales are expected to be held at the two Long Island Macy’s Backstage stores in the first quarter of the year.
The venerable department store chain plans to close 150 “underproductive stores” over a three-year period, according to a company statement. The closures are part of Macy’s “Bold New Chapter” strategy that was announced in February. The plan is designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth, closing underperforming locations and investing in 350 “go-forward” stores through fiscal year 2026.
“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Tony Spring, chairman and CEO of Macy’s, Inc., said in the statement.
The company says that since the start of its new strategy, investments in the first 50 “go-forward” stores have boosted sales for three consecutive quarters.
