FCA Fall Harvest Celebration raises money for essential services
Family & Children’s Association (FCA) recently hosted its Fall Harvest Celebration at the Heritage Club at Bethpage. Elisa DiStefano, senior lifestyle host at Newsday Media Group, emceed the event, which honored three Long Islanders for their contributions to FCA’s mission and celebrated the agency’s 140th anniversary. The annual event generates essential funds to support programs and services benefiting over 35,000 Long Islanders each year.
Charles ‘Charlie’ Manning, executive vice president at LiRo-Hill Engineers, was this year’s main honoree. The James J. Harnett Humanitarian Award was given to Thomas “Tommy” Shevlin, president of the Nassau County PBA. And Kim Cottage, co-founder of the Philanthropy Network of NY, received the Carol Wessel Humanitarian Award.
Nassau County coalition to mark 80th anniversary of end of WW II
During an event at the Museum of the American Armor in Old Bethpage, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced that the county has created a coalition of museums, veterans organizations, educators and support groups that will launch a series of programs and observances during 2025 to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Also present at the event, was 98-year-old Morton Abuhoff, of Farmingdale. A WW II combat veteran who fought major battles in Germany, Abuhoff received the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge and two major battles stars.
The Nassau County WW II Coalition includes the Museum of American Armor, the Cradle of Aviation, the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center, the Nassau County Veterans Agency and the Long Island Chapter of the Air Force Association.

U.S. News & World Report recognizes Northwell’s maternity care
Northwell Health’s Lenox Hill Hospital and Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center, including its division LIJ Forest Hills, have been named High Performing Hospitals for Maternity Care in U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 Best Hospitals rankings. This designation awarded by the publication in its annual evaluation of maternity care, underscoring the hospitals’ dedication to delivering safe, compassionate and evidence-based care to expectant mothers and their babies. It also emphasizes Northwell’s commitment to innovation, health equity and addressing key challenges in maternal health.
The recognition highlights Lenox Hill’s and LIJ’s exceptional outcomes and patient-centered approach, as evaluated by critical quality metrics, such as frequency of C-sections in lower-risk pregnancies, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, severe unexpected newborn complications and other areas.
