Donald Trump has asked Florida congressman Michael Waltz to be his national security adviser, in a move that would make the military veteran and noted China hawk among the most powerful people in the White House, according to people familiar with the discussions.
Waltz, 50, is a decorated special forces soldier who served several tours in Afghanistan, the Middle East and Africa. A loyal ally of Trump, he was first elected to Congress in 2018. He represents Florida’s 6th congressional district around Jacksonville.
Spokespeople for the Trump campaign and Waltz did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The Wall Street Journal first reported Waltz’s appointment on Monday.
