The Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) is hosting its first arts education summit Jan. 28 at Hofstra University.
The inaugural Long Island Arts Education Summit is designed to bring together educators, administrators, arts leaders, community advocates and business professionals to explore the power of arts education and collaboration in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
“Arts and arts education advocacy often operates in isolation, but the impact of the arts extends into many areas of our communities,” Lauren Wagner, executive director of Long Island Arts Alliance, told Long Island Business News.
Experts say that arts education fosters critical thinking, a highly sought after trait in the business world.
“Arts education involves more than just creating art; it plays a crucial role in shaping young minds, providing safe spaces, and developing essential skills such as creativity and innovation,” she added. “Business leaders can be strong advocates for arts education at the local, state, and national levels, as they recognize the importance of creative and innovative thinking in today’s workforce. Their support can lead to meaningful, collaborative advocacy that benefits the communities where they live and work.”
At the summit in January, Lester Young, Jr., chancellor of the Board of Regents at the University of the State of New York, will deliver the welcome and remarks. Roger Tilles, Long Island representative of the Board of Regents, will provide insights into the current and future state of arts education in New York State.
Julie Baker, CEO of Californians for the Arts, will share insights on advocacy and collaboration.
The event’s panel discussion is “Bridging Perspectives: The Role of the Arts in Education and Our Communities.” Breakout sessions will feature tailored tracks for educators and arts administrators, focusing on arts integration and successful partnerships with schools.
The day also includes a workshop on arts-education advocacy and additional networking opportunities.
The event is free for LIAA members, and $20 for non-members. Lunch is included.
