Drew Barrymore is getting candid about how difficult things really got after her split from ex-husband Will Kopelman.
As Perezcious readers likely know, the talk show host and actor split in 2016 after four years of marriage, during which time they welcomed their daughters Olive, 10, and Frankie, 8. After failing to give her kids the family life she’d always dreamed of, Drew turned to the bottle — and the situation got so serious, her friends and therapist were very concerned!

While speaking to the Los Angeles Times on Sunday, the 50 First Dates actress revealed her therapist Barry Michels, whom she turned to for help amid her split, actually had to quit on her because she was relying on alcohol way too much. She shared:
“He just said, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’ It was really about my drinking. I said, ‘I get it. I’ve never respected you more. You see I’m not getting better. And I hope, one day, that I can earn your trust back.’”
Whoa! Such a mature reaction to getting dumped by your therapist!!
Sadly, the 48-year-old began to spiral even more, creating a situation that was “difficult to watch” for some of her friends, according to Cameron Diaz, who noted:
“But I knew that if we all stuck with her and gave her the support she needed, she would find her way. I have absolute faith in her. You can’t even comprehend how hard it was to be her as a child, and then she shot out the other end with the ability to save herself.”
Chris Miller, her friend for 24 years, also told the outlet:
“We were like, ‘You’ve gotta snap out of it. We fully understand that this is a total f**k for you. But you’ve got two healthy kids, a fantastic career and incredible friends.’ And sometimes you have to be reminded of that.”
And while the E.T. alum eventually did save herself, it took her three whole years to crawl out of the dark place she found herself in! In fact, she owes her recovery to The Drew Barrymore Show! According to the TV personality, it wasn’t until she filmed the pilot in 2019 that she realized she needed — and wanted — to make a change in her life. She explained:
“I think the opportunity at a show like this really hit me. I was like, ‘I can’t handle this unless I’m in a really clear place.’”
Wow! You just never know what things might come into your life and change it forever. Thankfully, in this case, the show gave her the push she needed to make positive steps forward in her life, both professionally and for her mental health. Two years after her therapist called things off, they also resumed their professional relationship, too! Love to hear it!

The Charlie’s Angels star went on to share that she was wrestling with “a lot of stuff” in those three tumultuous years in her life, such as trying to figure out when and how to tell her daughters about her history with alcohol and substance abuse. She reflected:
“I realized that just with me and my girls, I am truly happy. I’d always thought I’d be on this hamster wheel for this whole life. But maybe there will be something different before the lights go out.”
She also realized she was the only person in her inner circle not rooting for herself at the time, she recalled thinking:
“You seem to be so inspired by everybody else, but you treat yourself like s**t. When are you going to be enough for yourself?”
All that said, the performer doesn’t pretend to have everything all figured out. She insisted she’s not “some perfect Puritan,” and she doesn’t attend Alcoholics Anonymous or work through her struggles via traditional programs. She’s just taking her journey one step at a time:
“I kept thinking, ‘I’ll master this. I’ll figure it out.’ And finally, I just realized: ‘You’ve never mastered this, and you never will.’”
As Perezcious readers may recall, Drew’s been dealing with addiction struggles since she was a teenager. We’re so glad to know she had an army of friends supporting her through this tough time — and even happier to see she’s on the other side of this ordeal. Breakups can really take a toll on you!
